“The time for the healing of the wounds has come. The moment to bridge the chasms that divide us has come. The time to build is upon us.”

- Nelson Mandela.

Materials and Construction

The primary structure consists of five engineered steel columns, like the fingers of a hand, which are built onto concrete pad foundations. The bowed shape of the columns and interlinking stay wires are designed to resist lateral and vertical forces, giving the sculpture the necessary structural integrity. The 5 floating forms are constructed from a lightweight aluminium frame, clad with various types of expanded metal sheeting. There is a lattice-like ring connecting the five columns. This ring performs a structural function and at the same time casts a circular shadow around the other shadows, giving a finishing touch to the picture painted by the shadows.
