“No one is born hating another person because of the colour of his skin, or his background, or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite.”
- Nelson Mandela.
Concept
The idea is to create a sculpture consisting of a series of floating forms which cast shadows on the floor. The seemingly randomly arranged forms are carefully manufactured and constructed so that at a set day in the year, and at a specific time of day, their shadows will align to cast the iconic shape of the African continent on the ground.
The day chosen for this to happen is the 18th July, the birth date of Nelson Mandela. The shadows will come into perfect alignment at 13h00 on this day. The joining of the shadows will symbolise the ideas and achievements of Nelson Mandela, who brought a fragmented country together to form a unified nation.
